    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper 1. You are allowed to offend people. 2. Defamation requires the person defamed to be alive. Muhammad is dead. 1. That is unreasonable, logically. Drawing a picture of someone is reasonable. 2. That is not analogous with the present case. This is a religion...

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Praising the Prophet Muhammad, and our world views lol. Well that's a new one. "Naive" isn't a word often attributed to me, I must say. There's no need to be so presumptuous, particularly when you're alleging something improbable. Indeed, with respect, the chances are that my knowledge of...

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper This is understandable - we do the same thing for many of our respected citizens. For judges we call them "your honour", etc. Although, we respect them for their contributions to society, not for religious reasons...

Career Advice - Failed subject, should I continue law?

Re: Advice Needed - Failed subject, should I continue law? Yes I think torts is a good subject to introduce students to answering legal problems. Some teachers have commented that it isn't that easy and should not be taught in first year. But in comparison to other subjects, it seems like it...

UK developments on "actual bodily harm"

Hehe. I suspect that, despite the overwhelming majority who would send them off to equity with a handkerchief, a few common law judges in particular may have enjoyed fleshing out awkward and somewhat inappropriate claims into new and wonderful little concoctions of their own.

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper Exactly. If you don't want to draw him, then don't. But don't insist that others cease from doing so.

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper Because free speech is essential to allowing open political discussion and to allow criticism of the government. Muhammed not being depicted in drawings is not.

    The Wheat Bribe Affair

Well I suppose if it was any other regime - but it was Saddam Hussein. I should also mention that for each transaction (or some predefined amount) the UN was distributing some of the money to Kuwait before giving the remainder to the Iraqi regime. So Saddam was jumping that filter as well.

    The Wheat Bribe Affair

Re: Wheatgate As you probably know, the oil-for-food program established by the UN was set up to allow the Iraqi government to sell oil in exchange for non-military products (humanitarian items like food, basic supplies, etc.). Baring in mind that Iraq had tough sanctions on it for a long time...

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper I am glad to hear that, but am still disappointed in the beliefs you hold on the issue. Surely you admit that if the Quran told you to jump off a bridge when you turned 18 and donate all your money to a swiss bank account, you would not do it? You may say that...

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper No not specifically. I'm just making the point that freedom of religion should always be trumped by other more important democratic rights and freedoms, where there is conflict. It is not a sin, and even if God existed it would not be a sin. I am disappointed...

UK developments on "actual bodily harm"

I'm not sure how that would come up though. If the assailant damages the clothes while they are on the victim, they would probably always come into contact with the victim. I'm trying to imagine someone getting a pair of scissors and snipping a little hole in someone's jumper or something...

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper It doesn't matter that you find it offensive. Just because a group of people are offended is no reason to bow to their (in this case) unreasonable demands. If there was a religion that proclaimed that the only acceptable clothes were those coloured pink, no...

    Muhammad Cartoon Controversy

Re: Jihad Against Danish Newspaper That's utterly ridiculous. And that cartoon was unbelievably tame! As much as many aspects of the US annoys me, you have to admire the First Ammendment. That sort of thing just wouldn't happen there.
