    pages for the pip?

You're right, an appendix is a crucial part of a piece of academic work and serves a number of key functions - yet it does not appear in the syllabus for THIS particular piece of academic work, and therefore the marking criteria, ergo will not be marked. A student would not be penalised for...

    pages for the pip?

Calm down! First of all, they won't give you 0! There may be a penalty but it would be minor - it may preclude you from moving into a higher mark range - you may end up sitting on 24 instead of moving up to 25-26, for example. But really, do try to get someone else to read it and tell you...

    pages for the pip?

I am a teacher of Society and Culture who has been marking PIPs for a number of years, any I still advise my students that they can use an appendix if they want, as long as they know that it's for their own peace of mind only and it won't be marked. I agree with you regarding the very long...

Question about Pop Culture Focus Studies

U2, while massive and having been around for a long time, doesn't really qualify as a Pop focus study - it's not a Pop culture, it's a band. McDonalds and Barbie are fine, even though some Pop markers may not like them personally they are accepted Pop cultures and they have been done many times...

    pages for the pip?

As long as students are aware that 95% of the time they do not get read, or even looked at. They are NOT in the marking criteria and therefore most markers (and that really does mean nearly all) don't look - markers don't have time to look at sections that will not contribute to the mark.

    Word Limit

For 500 word sections (log, intro and conclusion) the 10% rule does apply, so you may go to 550. Beyond that, you need to cut it down - 600 words is obvious. While you may not write the number of words on the page, markers are reading dozens of PIPs and they know exactly what 500 to 550 words...

    Its Almost Over!

The 10% rule does NOT apply to the Central Material, as you're given a word count RANGE, not a word LIMIT. As an HSC marker, I can tell you from experience that we do mark down students who exceed the word limit in the central material. Don't take the risk! As for getting the PIP mark back...

    Its Almost Over!

It is generally accepted that you may go 10% over the word limit for the short sections (log, intro and conclusion), however the central material allows such a wide lee-way (2500-5000 words) you should not go over 5000 words at all. If your central material is noticeably over 5000 words you can...

Save the PIP from the Board of Studies!

Hi all, While I know that most of you are probably not loving the PIP right about now, the Board of Studies has issued some worrying news that concerns you. They are proposing that the PIP be deleted from the Society and Culture course and students complete an extra depth study and do a 3...

    Some Advice on Online Research

As an addition to my previous post, I thought I should let you all know that the Board of Studies has made an official statement regarding the use of online research methodologies. In the Notes from the Marking Centre HSC 2007 for Society and Culture, the Board says: "carrying out surveys 'off...

You can also access extracts from past prize-winning PIPs at the website of the Society and Culture Association, at www.scansw.com - go to the Awards page, then have a look at the 2005 and 2006 awards. Good luck!

    PIP Survey PLEASE FILL IN!!

It is great that you are starting off on your PIP early, and that you're so motivated! However, you really should think about conducting your surveys the old-fashioned way and distributing paper copies to schools. Conducting a survey like this online is not a reliable way to gather research...

    Word Limit

You really do need to stick to the word limit. The Log, Introduction and Conclusion are supposed to be 500 words, and any more than 550 words is a very bad idea. The Central material must NOT be more than 5000 words. Markers ALWAYS know when a project is overlength - they spend hours reading...

is 6000 words too much for the central material?

You really need to keep the Central Material to an absolute maximum of 5000 words - the marking criteria gives you a range of 2500 to 5000 words in which to present your Central Material, which is a pretty generous range. It is expected that you can do this without going over the 5000 - markers...

    Please

The completion date is the date that you have to stop working on it - by midnight on the 29th. You have to hand it in to your school by 9am on the following day, Monday the 30th of July. The school has to then have the PIPs in to the Board of Studies within 2 weeks - but you aren't allowed to...

    Some Advice on Online Research

As a Society and Culture teacher with considerable experience, I have some advice for those of you who wish to use online forums and networking sites, like this one, for primary research for your PIP. Over the last few years more and more PIPs have been using less and less valid, reliable...
