Oh nah I only posted it in hopes a guy who did their hsc in 1916 would recognise it
They wouldn't have done the HSC in 1916. The first HSC was in 1967.

If they did the LC in 1916, they would have been born at about 1900 making them about 123 years old. The oldest person alive today is 115.

So you are posting for dead people hoping they will respond here?

I solved Question 5.

First, simplify the question.

picture.png

wlog let S=(0,a), L=(2a,a), A=(0,0), X=(0,-a) then it has equation x^2=4ay

rtp AN=NX i.e., N=(0,-a/2)

For the new parabola, vertex=(0,-a), focus=(0,a), focal length=2a

Then the equation is y=x^2/(4(2a))-a, so x^2=8a(y+a), directrix y=-3a

Equation for LX: y-a=((-a-a)/(0-2a))(x-2a) so y=x-a

For Q, -3a=x-a so x=-2a

For P, x=-2a so y=((-2a)^2)/(4(2a))-a=-a/2

So N=(0,-a/2) qed.

ps. I'm not dead.

What if they accelerated 8 yrs? so essentially the 115 yr old person can reply

Case closed.

That’s a bit of a stretch. That 115 year old is in Spain. The oldest Australian is 111 from Queensland, not NSW. And the oldest person in NSW is 109. So the more you look at it the more unlikely it is that anyone alive today did the 1916 LC.

Maybe we should refocus back to the maths.

So for question 6 I would suggest proving corresponding theorems for the circle and see how that translates to the ellipse by orthogonal projection.

Now I have a harder question for you relating to the 1916 Leaving Certificate examination.

Who were the 7 members of the Examination Committee in 1916?

To make it easier, I have listed the following 7 hints.

1. Who is the mathematics building at Sydney University named after?

2. Who was the headmaster of Shore from 1900-1910?

3. Who resigned from the position of Assistant Lecturer in 1914 from the University of Queensland Department of Mathematics?

4. Who got life membership of MANSW in 1948?

5. Who co-authored "Whitcombe's secondary arithmetic : a simplified secondary arithmetic" in 1940 together with the person in hint #4?

6. Who was appointed Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Sydney University in 1886?

7. Who married Margaret Ann Buxton on March 18, 1925?
