Hey there...If you go here to the Ancient History Resources there are quite a few notes on Sparta. Just scroll through them and pick the ones that are related to your assessment task. Don't stress out! And just remember...quotes are essential!

Elaborate on the nature of your assessment task, that way oneof us can help you out! If it's an essay, prepare some responses, know your quotes, and know your info. If it's short answers, read through some past papers, and once again, know your quotes and know your info! :)

my computer doesn't want to upload my sparta notes at the current time but since i have not much else to do i'll type some information up for you - hopefully it will be helpful

Agoge
- education system within Sparta
- aimed at preparing Spartan boys and girls for their latter positions in spartan society

Prepared boys for education in following ways
- trained military lifestyle - be obediant to state
- placed in barracks - under the control of public guardian - paidonmous
- trained barefoot - recieved only one garment a year
"Lycrugus...decreed that they should harden them (feet) by going barefoot" - Xenophon
-given small amounts of food - made to steal food - teach to be resourceful
"To make the boys craftier and more inevitive in getting supplies" - Xenophon
"A boy is beaten and goes hungrey if he is caught" - Plutarch

Plutarch said aim was to produce following
1. Obedicance to authority
2. Ability to endure pain and hardship
3. Courage and victory in battle

Prepared girls in following ways
- aimed giving them healthy bodies - produce strong babies
"the fruit that they concieve might take firmer root and find better growth and that they, with this greater vigor be more able to undergo the pain of childbearing" - Xenophone
-participated in education like boys - unlike athenian girls - this allowed them to control the spartan household

the kleroi

- land owned by Spartans
- property of the state -could not be traded or sold
- helots made up part of the kleroi
- could be handed down from father to son - could be given to a daughter if there was no living son
- helots tended to crops - provided money

the political system

simply put you had a heirachy
Kings
Gerousia
Ephors
Apella

Kings - three types of tasks - judicial / military / religious
- need to idenfity what they did within each role - some examples include

Judical - deciding on marriages of orphaned heiressess
- adopting of children
- "Definate legal matters are left to their sole decision" - Herodotus

Military - Supreme commander of the Amry - "lead teh army whenever the city dispatched it" - Xenophon
- Had "Power of declarding war on whom they please" - Herodotus
- Feild they had decision of life or death
- bodyguard of 100 men accopanied the king

religious - intermediate b/w man and gods
- cheif priest
- offered sacrific to appollo each month
- Appointed phthioi to consult Delphi oracle
- Regularly communicated with gods

Geriousia - council 30 men
- Best and most deserving men past sixity years" - Plutarch
- held office for life
- selected by acclamiation in assembly
- probouletic body - prepared and deliberated bills
- acted as court of justice

Ephors
- 5 elected for one year term
- any spartan over age 30 could apply
- cheif magistrates and adminsatriative officals to the king
- could imprision king
- mobilsation of army in war
- at end of their term they were subject to explanation of activities

Apella
- assembly - all Spartans over age of 30 could be a part of
- Met monthly at full moon
- elected ehpors, gerousia and magristrates
- only allowed to vote on proposals - could not ammend
- limited powers

spartan religion

very very important to spartans
- they missed teh battle of marathon to participate in their religious festivals (Karnea)

- three festivals they participate in
1. Karneia - Aug/sep - participated in chasing man in garland - good luck in harvest - 'cheese festival' - young spartans attempted to grab cheese from the temple without being wipped to death - rite of passage for boys

2. Gymnopedia - show of endurance - festival consisted fo athelectic comeptions among boys and men - "The principle aim of the Gymnopaedia was the habituation (accustom) of the Spartiate mainhood to ardous activity" Hooker - thanksgiving to Apollo for military sucess

3. The Hyakinthia - most important - held at shrine of Amycale - thought to be morning festival for apollo's lover who acidently killed

Hopefully that information will help you out a bit
Cheers Mel
