ok.. I've only heard about the big 4. KPMG, E&Y, Deloitte, PWC.

but what about the top 20/50.. is there a list of that?

Reason I'm asking.. is I'm willing to apply for ANY positions available in those firms.

I want work experience. bad. :(

http://brw.com.au/lists/top100accounting2004/top100accountancy2004.aspx

Hope this helps! It's the 2004 rankings based on revenues and other factors. Top 10 is replicated below:

1 PricewaterhouseCoopers
2 Ernst & Young
3 KPMG Australia
4 Deloitte
5 Investor Group Melbourne
6 PKF Australia
7 BDO Melbourne
8 Horwath Australia
9 Moore Stephens Australia
10 Pitcher Partners

In regards to the Top 10, and maybe others too, it's hard to get into them without going through some sort of program (unless you have connections). Usually you apply via their website when they offer their vacation or graduate recruitment programs.

Just don't become annoying^^ I'm not sure if the 2005 list is online anywhere but *gets out BRW*...

1. PwC (hit $1bn!)
2. EY
3. KPMG
4. Deloitte
5. Investor Group (doesn't really count as a firm since all they are is a network of lots of really small firms/companies)
6. PKF
7. BDO
8. Horwath
9. Moore Stephens
10. Pitcher Partners
11. Grant Thornton
12. RSM Bird Cameron
13. William Buck
14. Bentley's MRI
15. H&R Block
16. Nexia
17. Ferrier Hodgson
18. HLB Mann Judd
19. Acumen Alliance
20. KordaMentha

Btw figures are based entirely on revenue rank- the top10 remained the same, but there's a bit of movement in the 10-20... and there's also been a bit of news regarding different firms, I remember Bentley's as being the one in BRW not that long ago...

BRW does their annual Top100 Accounting firms listing around end of July don't they?

... as for IB, wouldn't have a clue.

Btw don't forget that those surveys/listings are based on projected/budgeted revenue- and not actual revenue.

I thought HSBC was meant to be a somewhat more prominent player than their ranking would suggest.

hey you seem to know quite a lot about the investment industry.

Does bigger=better?

Is Investment Banking culture:
At 11pm, Director to Analyst:
"hey can you crunch those numbers for me by tomorrow morning?"

That's really nasty stuff there. I'm suprised they let that kidna stuff be printed, as that site is sponsored by firms such as those. I guess the way they see it, even if it is slightly exaggerated (which it probably isn't), at least it stops the weak from applying - which is a good thing in their opinion.

Here's a summary of my day today...though it probably won't stay like this for long =\ These times are not precise.

8:40am Get to the office before the rush gets there to bags myself a desk. I do have an allocated desk but my desk buddy is usually there before I am and therefore I've been stuck on another desk.

8:45am Official start time. Laptop is setup to tell people this desk is taken and go and get coffee and biscuits. Sit in kitchen with a few people for almost 30 mins.

9:15am Get a call on my mobile from a Manager saying there's some work that I can do. I apologise for not having signed into my desk phone yet!

9:30am Meeting with the Manager to work out what I'm doing for the day.

9:40am Received instructions and do some editing and updating of documents.

10:30am Finished that task and go have another coffee.

10:45am Received another task of updating another document. This was longer than the previous task and required me to do a lot of formatting and editing.

12:20pm Finished previous task.

12:30pm Go out with my "buddy" for our official welcome lunch

12:45pm Get stuck in the rain

1:15pm Get stuck in even more rain

1:30pm Eventually get to a restaurant

1:45pm Order food for lunch

2:00pm Get food and start eating

2:45pm Head back to office after a very long lunch break

3:00pm Submit the work that I had finished before lunch. Get given some more work.

3:30pm Have afternoon tea. Admire the view from the stairs for the first time.

3:40pm Go and admire the view from the stairs again with a few other people this time

3:50pm Back to work again with editing documents

5:00pm Trying to get as much done as possible so I can go home soon

5:15pm Manager says I can go home soon if I want to

5:30pm Submitted what I had and packed up

5:40pm Left the office to go home :D

Me during Vacation work, Audit, $24/hr, stealing Jasee's template

On a quiet day:

8:45am Arrive barely on time, set up computer, check email

9:00am Talk to people, ask for work, write my name on "Unassigned" board, surf the net and walk around offices for the next 3 hours. Check email every 5min from boredom.

12:00pm ask people for more work, get nothing, so surf net more

1:00pm Eat Lunch

2:00pm Talk to people, ask people for work, walk around in circles at other department's offices and get dirty looks from people. Check email

5:15pm go home and watch TV

---

During the week where I had to be an Excel monkey :

8:45pm Excel crunching

1:00pm Lunch for 5min

1:05pm Excel crunching

5:30pm go home, have nightmares about excel

lol nah it depends on what you like better I guess. I wouldn't rely on a few people's perspective. I wouldn't say one's better than the other. I don't know if there is one job that everyone would like and be paid well for. Unfortunately its difficult to choose what career you want.

In my opinion both are boring, but then all jobs are. IB pays more for longer hours and more stress. But Audits no walk in the park either or fun and games either.

One thing that can be taken into consideration is that Auditors can and do move into Investment Banking, but not many Investment Banking analysts can move into auditing due to lack of qualifications.

i.e. Accounting can do Finance but Finance can't do Accounting.

Yea, it makes perfect sense. Investment banking doesn't look healthy, but it is very challenging and fast-paced than other careers which is more interesting that other commerce careers. But on the other hand, could you do a CA and move into Assurance if u dislike it? (Just wondering) {Even though IB truly sux}
