I'm slightly confused - are the Amduat and Book of the Dead the same thing? If not, what are the differences?

As far as I know, no. The amduat is also known as the 'book of What is in the underworld'. Wheras the Book of the dead is known as the 'Chapter of coming forth by day'. The book of the dead contained all the spells, rituals and all the other stuff like the judgement of the dead, which are needed to get into the afterlife. The amduat was basically a story-book of Ra's i.e. the sun's journey through the underworld and through the 'real' world.

I thought that might be the case. Thank you very much!

^ As above. However note that the Amduat was reserved for the king until the 21st Dynasty, whereas the Book of the Dead was used by everybody.
