out of curiosity can an employee force you to open a bank account with a certain institution because they will only pay into that institution? Government sites don't say anything about it so I thought I should ask here.

Ask your employer payroll to issue you with a check.

If they refuse...........don't work for them.

I highly doubt that this is legal. May I ask what kind of business it is?

Definately contact the Workplace Ombudsman to confirm - maybe they can help you with your employer.

If its a bank they can ask that, and fair enough - you should be using their product not their competitors but apart from that I dont think its allowed to happen...

I wouldnt have thought that that was legal. Besides, it's a bullshit excuse, every bank in Australia would let you transfer money into any other bank account in australia.

What I was thinking is that its quite a small business that doesn't want to pay fees or whatever for transferring outside their institution.

And Peartie even thats not acceptable. When my mum worked at Bankwest, all of her pay went to a Commonwealth account.

It's a cafe i've been told hospitality are notorious for doing this my boyfriend's old work did it to him and a person at another bank told him they weren't allowed to do it. Thanks for the word, just thought i'd double check
