Law enforcement agencies will be able to access emails, text messages and voicemails under controversial laws passed by parliament on Monday.

Labor agreed to pass the bill in the Senate after the government promised a full review of the Telecommunications Interception Act within 12 months.

But the Australian Democrats and Greens opposed the bill - the Telecommunications (Interception) Amendment (Stored Communications) Bill 2004 - on the grounds that it seriously breached privacy.

Justice Minister Chris Ellison said privacy protections were built into the legislation.
Can anyone else see the irony in that Enemy of The State was on last night?

Am I guilty until proven innocent then?

Only the guilty have to fear? Have you heard of civil liberties and the basis of our legal system - presumption of innocence.

"The only people in Germany today who have a private life are asleep" - Nazi Minister 1939 -ish

I hate to loose an argument by invoking Goddards law by being the first to link to Hilter -however that quote was too good to pass up.

If the government wants to look through my emails good for them. I'm sure they'll enjoy all the "penis enlargement" junk mails I'll get.

Seriously, unless you have something in your email that is really private, then big deal. I have emails from friends, but it doesn't bother me if someone wants to try and access them, because they will if they want to.

Emails aren't impenetrable to hackers etc, so nothing in your email is really safe. Besides, I'm almost fairly certain about this, when you sign up to hotmail and you tick a contract saying that they can access whatever's in your inbox anyway.

My e-mails are stored on an overseas server (in Germany) and are deleted almost immediately. The only way they could access my e-mails is if they intercepted them on one of the nodes as I downloaded/viewed them or checked my hard drive's cache.

Australias internet connection is all delivered via a big cable which surfaces in paddington if you have access apparently it is childsplay to read emails and the like. Especialy if you are part of a large well funded intelligence network called echelon which is a partnership of US, British, Australian and a couple of other intelligence services, its function is the interception possibly decryption and examination of the majority of the information trafficked across the globe.

Funny, but the people who would actually do the filtering wouldn't just look at a photo of people in water next to a boat and say 'children overboard'.. at least you'd hope not.

You can use spiders/robots ( automated piece of script/code that searches) to search through shit loads of email, for specific words and report back the results like google sort of or any other search engine.

we never have had total privacy in these forms of communications anyway and it has already got into the wrong hands. there is no way im going to kick up a stink about my privacy if this could protect us from a terrorist attack. call me naive but i think it is worth it
