I'm driving my mum's car to and from work.. it's got third party insurance and is under her name and all... does this insurance cover me too?
I don't want to buy insurance for me (if that's what should happen) since I'm moving away in a couple of months and don't want to pay for a whole year's insurance...
can anyone tell me how much trouble I'm going to be in if I bump someone's car before I leave home?

Third party insurance doesnt have anything to do with the driver, it covers the cost of anyone who gets injured in an accident. If you have a bump you will have to pay to fix both cars. Why doesn't your mum have comprehensive insurance? Also, naming a secondary driver or whatever doesn't cost that much more.

doesn't cost much more? it costs heaps more, dude, esp if its a p plater. I think you'd be better off not nominating yourself as a driver cos it'll throw your premium out of whack, best just take the 1k/2k etc excess if something does go wrong.

Oh nah, that's pretty much what we did. The premium hardly changed because of my dad's no-claim bonus and all that but if I'm in an accident the excess is way higher.

My parents don't have me as a secondary driver. I rarely drive, and I mean, like since getting my red Ps (going for my greens on Thursday), I have driven about 10 times. So the thing is, how often do you drive for work?

If it's fairly often, might be an option. Otherwise, the sensible thing would always be to drive safely and hope that nothing happens until you move away.

Same. Their premium is no higher but its a $1000 excess if I'm at fault.
