I know theres probably a thread dedicated to this and most people are leaning towards med, but do you think it's worth applying to med if you really are only interested in dent?

Is the entry process more difficult for med than dent in most unis?

Some people dig the maxilofacial stuff, but for me dentistry is a less interesting subset of medicine proper (it makes use of anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, etc... in a similar, but more limited, way). If you find dentistry vaguely interesting then, by extension, given the similar subject matter, it makes sense that you would find interest in medicine (note, at USyd Med and Dent share a proportion of their curricula).

well if more people want to do med, its going to b harder. dentistry is one of those professions where u either regret it ur whole life or you actually enjoy it. hence the highest suicide rate among all professions (not sure if it is anymore, but it was last time i checked).
pros: easy hours, high salary, guaranteed employment
cons: repetitive, not as rewarding, minimal variety in terms of future

medicine
pros: rewarding, guaranteed commitment, wide variety of pathways, each case is different (i.e. in terms of the illness many things need to be considered before treatment can begin. e.g. culture, lifestyle, history, religion and family).
cons: long hours, high rates of substance abuse (accessible), long term commitment, relatively low salary to begin with

the choice is really urs. if u want to do dentistry, then go for that. not much point having med as a back up. cuz u prob wont get into that either.

same goes for the people wanting med. if you dont make it into med, dont have dent as a back up. just keep trying for med. do the course you want to do, not the easier one to get into. its all about chasing the dream.
inspired? good

internship=slave labour (22 bucks an hour in most victorian hospitals). however, you do get to walk around the hospital in scrubs and a steth around ur neck which kinda makes up for it.

^^You serious internship rate is so low? Then again, most grad pharmacists in community pharmacies are making $15/hour (full-time rate) so I guess it's all proportional in terms of not being registered. I hope it's a phenomenonal leap after that!

i hope so too. but there is a leap after you specialise. ur looking at the 200-500k range depending which specialty you choose/where you go/how good you are etc. and thats another 5-8 years (GP=3 years). so by the big salaries only come when you're 32+ (depends on when u start uni, length of degree, how many times you fail etc). thats another decade and a half for me...T_T
