differences between aes and mass spectrometer (1 Viewer)

hey guys what are the different uses of a mass spectrometer and aes?

mass spec - determined by mass: charge ratio
aes - emission spectra

i read somehwere aes is more qualitative whereas mass spec. is more quantitative?

if they both determine what the unknown element is, in which cases would the forensic chemist use which?

any help is much appreciated =)

Mass spectrometry is a form of analysis which separates and identifies substances on the basis of the masses of positive ions formed by the substances when they are bombarded by high energy particles in a high vacuum.

AAS is not based on mass, but on the absorption of light by the electrons in atoms.

Mass spectrometers can analyse not only elements, but compounds. AAS is only able to analyse elements, one element at a time.

Mass spectra are graphs with peaks indicating ion masses while AAS calibration graphs are absorption vs. concentration of ions.

AES is qualitative while mass spectometry is quantitative (and qualitative, actually )

AES is used only for detecting elements, while mass spectometry provides information on the structure and composition of compounds.
