Hydrazine gas is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen. It can be represented by the formula NxHy. Hydrazine can be decomposed into nitrogen gas and hydrogen gas.
In an experiment, 10.0L of hydrazine gas decomposed into 10.0L of nitrogen gas and 20.0L of hydrogen gas. The volumes were measured at a constant 150C and 100kPa.
Determine the molecular formula of hydrazine.

write a balanced formula equation for the decomposition of hydrazine gas showing phases.

When the temperature was reduced, a sample of N2(g) was collected. It occupied 3.1L at a pressure of 100kPa and its mass was 3.5g. What was the temperature of the gas when it was collected?

using stoichiometric ratios and the ideal gas law the ratio of substances can be determined:

NxHy -> AN2 + BH2

10L : 10L : 20L

1 : 1 : 2
therefore, a = 1, b = 2

therefore x = 2, y = 4

therefore hydrazine is N2H4

for part B you use the combined gas law and the molar mass of the substance to work it out

therefore T = 299K
