one standard deviation above the mean, means u are in the top 85% of the canditure, 2 standard deviations means the top 95% and 3 means the top 1%

the standard deviation for 4u is usually about 18 and the mean about 55 / 120 raw

so if u got above 77 out of 120 raw u will get above 85% aligned, if u get above 95 / 120, u will get above 95% and if u get above 113 / 120 u will get 99%

i think tahts about right
i may have got my bell curve mixed up

You mean, the top 15% and top 5%, or, you beat 85% and 95%.

don't they mean the same thing...? Unless u mean 85% as a mark and 95% as a mark, and not the amount of people.....

Well, using the number of standard deviations away from the mean of a normal distribution you can work out your rank, or percentile, with some statistics formulae. About 68% of the candidature would be within 1 standard deviation of the mean, 95% within 2 and 99% within 3. Taking what gordo said, that should mean that 68% would have got within 55+/- 18, 95% within 55 +/- 36 and 99% within 55 +/- 54. Hmm, those who got above 110 would be ranked bloody high.
