My current school right now is ranked 97th in hsc rankings. When i get to year 12 to do hsc and lets say our rankings are give or take 10 ranks does my atar drop due to school ranking? How much of the atar do we drop by if we do drop? Thanks
The school ranking as people have mentioned above doesn’t mean you can’t get a certain ATAR.
Just to give you an illustration of why it is not that important is based on what happened in my school in 2014, 2015, 2016.
2014 the school had its highest rank in the 40s yet only two students that year got 99 ATAR with one of the 99s at around 99.1.
2015 the school dropped 20 ranks to 60ish and still two people got 99
2016 the year I did my hsc we had a rank basically in the middle of those two low 50, yet we had 6 people that year that a 99+ ATAR and a record number of students for the school getting above 90+ atar
So as you can see the school ranking changing doesn’t really per say influence the individual results of people. Maybe we didn’t have as strong as an overall cohort in 2016 compared to 2014 because maybe the average student that year was better but the top of the class was much better in 2016 vs 2014. To reiterate how little the trends from previous years mean in our science classes the previous year 1 person got band 6 biology in 2015, 1 person got band 6 in chemistry 2015, 4 band 6 in physics for 2015. Then 2016 we had like 15-20 band 6 in biology, 6/17 people got band 6 in Chem and 5/13 got band 6 in physics
The school rank is just a collective rank that they get from amount of band 6s/amount of exams sat x 100 to make it into a percentage
So even if let’s say your school is ranked 97. It does not matter if the rank drops. If the rank drops and you get a bad mark that is because you performed poorly in the exam rather than another student dragged you down so much in most cases
