just wondering, do they base 1st place in a course solely on the hsc exam mark or on a combination of your assessment marks aswell?

i.e. Person A gets 87 raw assessment marks for a subject, but in the hsc manages to score 100

does that person become 1st in state or, would it be

Person B who gets 93 raw assessment mark for the same subject as person A, and gets 98 in the hsc exam?

n.b. for the case of this the hsc marks haven't been modified

can someone please clear this up?
thanks

raw assessment marks arent taken into account when calculating HSC marks.

therefore, whoever does the best in the exam, and gets the highest aligned HSC exam mark (this would depend on their rank) would be first in the state

Just to clarify:

HSC mark = average of moderated assessment mark and examination mark

The student with the highest HSC mark (and where that mark is above 90) is given the 'first place' award. It is not necessary to have obtained either the top exam mark or the top moderated assessment mark; the average of the two simply needs to be above everyone else's.

You've given us raw marks, and raw marks are always replaced by new marks.

If person B's moderated assessment mark was more than two points greater than person A's moderated assessment mark, then yes, person B would receive the higher HSC mark.

NB: The 'two points' is the difference between the students' exam marks.
