Will they always give you the substitution to use for integrating?
I thought they did, but the 2008 3U HSC (Q1e) expects you to make it up yourself...

They do in Mathematics Extension 1 but not in Mathematics Extension 2.
Or you can just integrate by inspection if you are capable of doing so.

they will 99% of the time give it. but if they don't i think it is relatively easy to choose what you should be substituting for.

from what i have encountered, they will usually ask trigonometric integrals without providing a suitable substitution

just checked the 2008 HSC, the question doesnt require you to use substitution. Although using substitution helps you see it better. You need to use the reverse chain rule:

Intergral of f'(x).f(x)^n = f(x)^n+1/n+1 +c
