Set up an induction coil with a spark up the top. Place a battery powered radio at the back of the room and listen to AM. Here the static when the induction coil is on.

A DC induction coil was attached to a power supply. When the radio was turned on and tuned to receive radio waves, every time a spark was generated across the induction coil, there would be a crackle of interference on the radio, indicating that the radio received the waves produced by the spark. This is similar to Hertz's setup.
