I have an assessment task coming up where we have to write a critical essay under 40 min. My English teacher recommends that i should try to write 1000 words in a essay though its not listed on our guidelines. However, i can only write on average 500-680 words under 40 min so should i be concerned or am i fine?

no, this is probably not what u want to hear, but you're definitely not fine. it is always recommended, and in fact expected to write 1000-1200 words in 40min, maybe BARE minimum being 900 words. but even 900 words wouldn't be too good. if you want to get a high mark - or even average tbh - u rlly want to be aiming for 1000-1200 words (make sure all the words are actually adding to the essay tho - don't just ramble nonsensically)

disagree
recommended 800-1000
1200 is if u are constantly writing without stopping; this requires u to have a pre memorised adaptable response (which is fine and u should have some regardless) but still u can get a bit thrown off as u literally have to constantly keep writing (not gona work for most people)
1000 is pretty good imo to aim for as u have more time to adapt ur response and come up with new things incase u need to
800 is good too; u can still pull 20s but probably requires more skill than even a 1200 essay as to get 20s u need to have absolutely no rambling, a perfect flow, and probably a very good vocab (its difficult on both ends)

Quality > Quantity anyday. If you’re producing effective essays you’ll find that you’ll write more (obv theres a point where u just write unnecessary bs and waffle), but honestly just practice writing to improve your speed especially under exam conditions

this is true to an extent - if you have less than 800 you risk not having enough evidence to support your argument
Yeah i know 😭 thats why i said youll write more (800+) when ur writing good essays hahha
