I've prepared an essay for Economics that is 1037 words in length and it answers the question precisely and is straight to the point. Is that an acceptable length for 50 minutes, or should I extend it?

Thanks!

Depends on your pen speed and style of writing. Also make sure you have 5 minutes at the end to speed read over your work and make corrections. Try timing yourself now by rewriting your essay from memory by hand. You'll see how much you're able to produce in 50 minutes and see how much you can recall.

ideally you should do about 1400 words in 50 minutes at least speed-wise

but since this is an economics essay and not english which is a lot easier to prepare, 1200 should leave you enough time to think and improvise on the question.

Should be able to do more than 1037 in 50 minutes, especially with the question given beforehand, I think.

Leave yourself with some time to allow for checking, etc

Nah, the question wasn't given before hand, but I've been able to derive the question from the syllabus and have made an answer according to the question I think it'll most probably be.

But it's still expected that you write a fair bit. It's not possible to fully answer the question if you don't write over two pages..

It is certainly about quality not quantity as menitoned above. I think 1000 words sound alright as long as the quality of that is acceptable.

1037 words is absolutely fine, as long as you can write it within the time limit.

just make sure that you have sufficiently explained + covered everything needed to answer the likely question.

there's no "rule" as to what length constitutes to a good essay. some people are able to explain things succinctly, whilst others use more words to get across the same idea.

As a general rule a page hand written is around 250 words but it depends obviuosly.

1400 sounds a very reasonable amount quantity wise to me. I can do 1500 ok but thats cutting it pretty fine and theres no time for checking.

i think writing around 1000 for an essay is acceptable provided you answer the question well. some people can probably do it in 900. all depends on quality, although the general perception is that writing more means you're covering it better, which half the people don't do as they just start to blab on about unrelated stuff so that they can fill up more pages.

One of our economics teacher told our class he's marked 20 page (standard-size papers) essays for the HSC which have received a 18/20, but then again he's also marked ones that were only 6-pages long that got full marks. So, if your essay is straight to the point like you said, then it should not be a problem.
