macOS Sierra Developer Preview 10.12 has been released on the mac app store to developers. A redemption code can be obtained from https://developer.apple.com/download/ after logging in with a developer ID to then download the installer.

To make a bootable usb format an 8 GB (or preferably 16GB) USB3 drive which should be called Untitled and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The installer should be called Install 10.12 Developer Preview.app and should be in your Applications folder.

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

sudo /Applications/Install\ 10.12\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ 10.12\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction

Also, reverting core storage still works in Sierra.

If the installation creates a core storage logical volume you can revert it to get partitions back to normal by running these 2 commands in terminal.

diskutil cs list

and then

diskutil coreStorage revert lvUUID

where lvUUID is the last lvUUID reported by the previous Terminal command.

Then restart for everything to get back to normal after you have run these commands in Terminal.

This is good if you want the recovery partition to show up in the startup manager you get when booting up with the option key.

Sierra is up to 10.12 now. It's faster than 10.9. Why don't you update to 10.12?

Apple have removed the option to allow apps from anywhere in "System Preferences>Security & Privacy"

Here's how to bring back the option to allow apps downloaded from anywhere to "System Preferences>Security & Privacy"

1) Open Terminal
2) Type

sudo spctl --master-disable

3) Enter your password

macOS Sierra Public Beta has been released on the mac app store. A redemption code can be obtained from https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/ after logging in with an apple ID to then download the installer.

To make a bootable usb format an 8 GB (or preferably 16GB) USB3 drive which should be called Untitled and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The installer should be called Install macOS Sierra Public Beta.app and should be in your Applications folder.

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra\ Public\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra\ Public\ Beta.app --nointeraction

Bootable USB of DP2

Apple mysteriously deleted DP1 from the purchases tab in the mac app store and a few days later it reappeared. But what they didn't tell you is that the reappeared one is actually an updated version of DP2, not DP1 again.

The new version of DP2 is build 16A239m whereas the previous version of DP2 was build 16A239j.

The installer name has changed too. It is now called

Install macOS Sierra Developer Beta

whereas before it was called

Install 10.12 Developer Preview

So to make the bootable usb of DP2 build 16A239m format an 8 GB (or preferably 16GB) USB3 drive which should be called Untitled and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The installer should be called Install macOS Sierra Developer Beta.app and should be in your Applications folder.

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra\ Developer\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra\ Developer\ Beta.app --nointeraction

Also, reverting core storage still works in Sierra DP2.

If the installation creates a core storage logical volume you can revert it to get partitions back to normal by running these 2 commands in terminal.

diskutil cs list

and then

diskutil coreStorage revert lvUUID

where lvUUID is the last lvUUID reported by the previous Terminal command.

How to enable Hey Siri activation on a mac with Sierra

So far apple have not enabled voice command Hey Siri activation for a mac with Sierra - which is disappointing since if we have Siri, why not? There should be nothing stopping it. Apple might not have done it because they think it might interfere with nearby iPhones. Well I don’t have an iPhone so I don’t care about that. I have an android phone so it is not going to affect me.

Currently by default you have to click the icon to activate Siri. Let's say I don't want to click the icon to activate it. Let's say I want to activate it just by saying "Hey Siri" instead. Then you can turn on this feature as follows:

1. Go to apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Dictation

If options are greyed out you may have to enable Enhanced Dictation in Dictation Preferences and wait for it to download and install. This is actually in the Keyboard Preferences so when this is finished, go back to Dictation in Accessibilty.

2. Tick Enable the dictation keyword phrase and change it to Hey

3. Click Dictation Commands

4. Tick Enable advanced commands

5. Press + to add a new command

6. Fill in settings as follows:

For When I say - type Siri

For While Using - leave it as Any Application

For Perform - select Open Finder Items - navigate to Applications folder and select the Siri App - click Open

7. Click Done

————————

Note this is a bit buggy because it might not work at first and you may have to go back and untick “Hey” and “Siri” - go out of system preferences - and then back in again to retick them. It should work after that.

Bootable USB installer of Sierra GM and public releases

To make the bootable usb of Sierra GM and public releases format an 8 GB (or preferably 16GB) USB3 drive which should be called Untitled and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The installer should be called Install macOS Sierra.app and should be in your Applications folder.

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

Here is how to make a bootable dvd for the Sierra installer.

Copy and paste these into terminal to make the bootable iso file (assuming you have already downloaded Sierra to your Applications folder via the mac app store):

hdiutil attach /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg -noverify -nobrowse -mountpoint /Volumes/install_app

hdiutil create -o /tmp/Sierra.cdr -size 7500m -layout SPUD -fs HFS+J

hdiutil attach /tmp/Sierra.cdr.dmg -noverify -nobrowse -mountpoint /Volumes/install_build

asr restore -source /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.dmg -target /Volumes/install_build -noprompt -noverify -erase

rm /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation/Packages

cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/Packages /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation/

cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.chunklist /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/BaseSystem.chunklist

cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.dmg /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/BaseSystem.dmg

hdiutil detach /Volumes/install_app

hdiutil detach /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/

hdiutil convert /tmp/Sierra.cdr.dmg -format UDTO -o /tmp/Sierra.iso

mv /tmp/Sierra.iso.cdr ~/Desktop/Sierra.iso

A bootable iso file called Sierra.iso will then appear on your desktop and you can use this to burn it to a dual layer dvd:

sudo drutil burn /Users/YOURNAME/Desktop/Sierra.iso

where you replace "YOURNAME" with the username for the account you are logged into at the time.

and then boot to startup manager with option key to select the dvd.

Serious question, is there any good reason to update to Sierra security/feature-wise? I won't be needing the Siri or iMessage features and OSXmavericks is already making my system run slow.
