The tutorial sheet for 1901 week 2 is just revision from HSC complex numbers...nothing interesting. The lecture notes isn't probably worth it, but you probably don't need to turn up to lectures for a few weeks if you buy it.

And it should be MATH1001/1901/1906 discussion...unless the 1906 people want to talk about topics in their seminar, which I personally don't mind.

I meant like she went through it more thoroughly so it gave my memory more time to reload...coz after the HSC i just shut down so i don't really remember much....

I'm a bit lost in regards to division of complex numbers. The example in the lecture notes seems to miss a rather important step, and I have no clue what they did.

1901 is UN - understandable...
1902 is merely handle-able...

tho they are both quite cool subjects =D

@thaoroxy2001: are u still using P 1 or something with 512 KB RAM?....upgrade it already. u need at least P4 3 GHz with 512 MB RAM and 256 MB Video memory.....:p

If you have the lecture notes for 1001, turn to page 13, and look at the example on the top of the page. I don't know how they got from the second step to the third step.

I don't have lect notes for 1001. I have 1901 only. post the question here.

5 - 10i
1 + 2i

After the first obvious step (multiplying top and bottom by the complex congugate), there is this:

5 - 20i + 20i^2
1 - 2i +2i -4i^2

Then the next step shows this:

-15 - 20i
5

So what I wanna know is, how did we get from there to there?

1 + 2i

multiply top and bottom by complex conjugate of the denominator to "realise" [make real] the denominator. [hint: remember rationalising?...similar to that]
the complext conjugate of any complext no. z = x + iy is x - iy

So:

5 - 10i x 1 - 2i
1 + 2i .... 1- 2i

= (5 - 10i)(1 - 2i)
1^2 - (2i)^2

[diff of 2 squares for denom.]

= -15 - 20i
1 + 4

=-15 - 20i
5

NOTE: i^2 = -1

lol........u siad "I meant like she went through it more thoroughly so it gave my memory more time to reload". well......I'm kinda a computer addict...and I related the word "reload" to computers reloading.....and if the comp is a low end system...then it takes longer to reload.....blah...blah...blah...*stops*
