mesons or muons???

"supporting evidence has been found in the abundance of mesons striking the ground after being
created in the upper atmosphere. Mesons have a lifetime of approximately 2.2μs. The mesons hitting the
ground have a velocity of about 0.996c and at that speed it should take approximately 16μs to travel through
the atmosphere to the ground. However, a large number of mesons are able to make it to the ground because
at 0.996c their lifetime is dilated to 16μs or greater."

muons. they are sometimes called mu mesons but they are not classified as ordinary mesons.

Muons are created when a charged pion decays.

well the excel book uses "muons" and jacaranda uses "mesons"

im confused

so do we name these particles "mesons" in the exam?

Use 'muons' in the exam, in both the standard model in Q2Q and proof of time dilation in Space.

Use muon 'cause muons aren't mesons. A Muon is one of the fundamental particles in the Lepton family (along with the electron) - you can think of a muon as being like a fat electron . Mesons are composed of quark/anti-quark pairs, whereas a muon is fundamental in itself (for now at least), so I wouldn't refer to a muon as a meson.
