Mooting is similar to a mock trial competition!

Except you don't have witnesses or anything like that.

As Tim said, you're given a scenario and you have to act either for the plaintiff or the defendant (or appellant/respondent) and present their entire case. It's all about developing your legal argument and litigation skills.

It's really fun. :D UNSW has separate competitions for students in every year of their law degree.

You can read an old mooting manual here:
http://www.unswlawsoc.org/publications/mootingmanual.html

And I've uploaded what we had as our first case (along with sample submissions etc) for you here:
Carbunde v Hobsons' Bay Yacht Club
Rundown on the above case
Sample submission

NB: They gave us extra help for the first one; usually we wouldn't receive the second two files.

I'm about to begin my third year - I haven't decided yet whether I'll practise. The degree is mainly there to broaden my horizons.

Definitely extra-curricular.

The number of students who participated in each round for the first-year comp:

Round 1 - 88
Round 2 - 96
Round 3 - 72

I forget how many there actually are in first-year, but as you can see, quite a number of them do it.

It certainly helped me a lot (and it's great fun too). I'd thoroughly recommend it!

does it take a lot of your time to research other cases and write up stuff and prepare for your case?

is the mood serious or is it like friendly and relaxed?

Yes, it does take a lot of time, but you're only given the case three days in advance - so you're franctically researching etc for those three days, and for the rest of the semester, you don't have to worry about it. :)

You have to follow court etiquette, so it can seem serious at times, but generally it's pretty friendly.

There's one competition per year, which usually involves one or two moots per semester.

There'll be notices posted about the place (and on www.unswlawsoc.org) during your first few weeks of uni - sign up then.

lol!

You'll get to watch a moot before you have to do one... and you get given a manual with all the formal lines that need to be said.

It's really not that hard. :) And lots of fun! :D

It sounds just like mock trial comp at school but slightly easier because you don't have witnesses and stuff...and it's more legal knowledge. Mock trial was just us arguing without any legal knowledge whatsoever.

I think it'll be fun
