Well transformers made electricity a very attractive way to get energy to power society, and so a high demand of electricity on a large scale, meant fossil fuels such as coal to power the generators lead to atmospheric pollution as sulfur and nitrogen oxides, which combine with rain to form acid rain and this has consequences on infrastructure and ecosystems. Also increase in carbon dioxide levels resulted which has contributed to global warming.

All you need to know is from under the dot point:

4.2.7 discuss the impact of the development of transformers on society
  • Before transformers, power stations were located inside cities
  • Transformers allow voltages to be transmitted over long distances
  • ŸPower losses reduced--> cheaper
  • ŸAllows for decentralised electricity grid
  • Power stations out in country; reduce costs by being closer to coal deposits
  • Pollution reduced in cities
  • ŸTransformers allow appliances to be run- those that require high or voltages
