Came across a station that not only broadcasts online as well as in their town, but also adjusts their playlists according to what people vote for every week:

how does this online radio thing work? i have noticed it in media player before but have never been bothered to use it

You just click the "Listen live" bit

If you have newest IE, it should just open in Windows Media frame on left of IE.
Or maybe real player, winamp, etc?
Depending on what they stream in and what your default music player settings are.
