Mystery: whole idea of accretion of evidence, trying to uncover the crime, criminal, victim or method of crime. Aids in the build up to a climatic denouement.

Discovery: uncovering the true identity of the criminal. Uncovering the real character of the investigator and how the pursuit of the criminal has influenced them.
