Do we need to reference allusions/intertexuality in footnotes when writing an essay?

I think the general rule of thumb is, if you're unsure, reference it. Its better to have the supporting reference than be questioned down the line with plaigarism.

Also it can be used to show wider reading, ie, This text A also uses X and Y from text B. So it can never really hurt.
