Received this email from uSyd today:

If you require security building access on your 2008 student card, you
will need to have written authorisation from your Faculty Office.

Once you have authorisation, take it along with your 2008 card to the
Security Systems office where they will update your card.

If you had building access on your 2007 card, please take both your 2007
and 2008 cards to Security Systems to have your card updated for 2008.

Security Systems
Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4pm

What exactly does the security building do?

I thought it meant that if you require access to a secure building after hours, then you go to the security building to get your card updated. Not that you go the security building to gain access to the security building during semester. lol.

But I could be wrong.

I was thinking about it in case of locked doors for early morning chemistry classes. Sometimes the level 1 entrances are locked and you need a swipe card to get in. It'd be convinient to get access to that door whenever I wanted.

No first years can get (or need) security access.

End of thread.

I doubt there's a blanket ban on first years getting after-hours access, but it's unlikely that a first year would need it. I think it's aimed more at research students who might want to work independently at odd hours.

yeah, anybody can get after-hours carslaw lab access, but yeah, in general, only 4th year and above or tutors need swip card access

i.e. i will probably be able to get after hours access to my supervisors labs, and to the Psych Honours computer lab

but previously, u needed a seperate swip card, as they couldnt put it on your student card

Most labs can be used by anyone. Some faculties (economics and business, possibly IT) have their own labs which can only be used by people studying in those faculties.
