I'm confused as to when 'zu + infinitive' should be used?? It might just be me, but I'm not noticing a trend in the texts I have which include that.

'Ich möchte ein Arzt sein' _oder_ '.. zu sein' ?????

'Ich plane, .... zu gehen.'

Ich hoffe, ich schreibe nicht zu spät...

Just use it like the friend OF THE mother. They all basically mean "of the". SoÖ

The friend OF MY brother ist gay
Der Freund MEINES BRUDERS ist schwul.

At the end OF THE day I was tired.
Am Ende DES TAGES war ich müde.

Die Kinder DER Frau sind freundlich.
The kids of the woman (the woman´s kids) are friendly.

So basically, they are:

masc. and neuter
des - meines and add "es" or "s" to the end of the noun (look at BruderS and TagES)

fem. and plural:
der - meiner

Good luck!

The modal verbs like wollen, mögen, können, dürfen etc. don´t need a ZU.

So you say:

ich möchte gehen
du darfst nicht gehen
ich will tanzen
das kann ich nicht machen

But, with other verbs, you need the ZU

So like:

Ich habe vor, zu gehen - I intend to go
Ich bin gekommen, um zu sehen - I have come to see... (um ... zu VERB = in order to VERB)

Hope that made sense. Any more questions? :)

Oh, think of it this way - if you say "IN ORDER TO" in english and it makes sense, use ZU.

So I write this, IN ORDER TO help you. So use zu in "Ich schreibe, um dir zu helfen"

If it doesn´t make sense in english to use in order to, just TO, or even nothing, then don´t use zu.

So I want TO HELP. I can dance. (nothing) I may go out (nothing)

See?

our teacher he didn't run through that in class as its not part of the beginners syllabus specifically and therefore can't really gain marks for it. But it shows your know stuff.. makes your answers way better.

Thanks a load!!

yeah it makes good sense

Ich habe Lust, nach Deutsch land zu fahren.
I want to, to go to German. :/

Ich möchte nach Deutschland fahren.

am I correct in thinking that there is no 'zu' in the second example there?

edit: oh sorry, missed your first post on this question ;) thanks!

That's a bit slack of your teacher. If you're ripping along and can obviously handle it, so much the better. And you will fall in the top band if you consistently + accurately use advanced structures, so you'll ace it mate. Good luck!

EDIT: exactly, you've got it :D

I'm continuers, not a native speaker though. The trick is to listen to heaps of German music. But thanks :)

Ah well, at least you had enough for a class, I didn't like doing it through distance education. But I still don't think you have anything to worry about, you're doing better than many of the continuers candidates who get the lower bands! So roll on band 6, yeah?

Anyway, ich wohne auf dem Land und 'the examination precinct' ist nicht in der nehe von... ich muss für 30 Minuten fahren. Die Prüfung findet im ein Stunde statt.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
Viel Glück für dich auch.

Wiedersehen.
