I won the Conservatorium vote, with over 25% of eligible students voting at my campus in the 2 and a half hours of polling there on the quietest day of the week, with 90% of voters supporting Conservatorium Voice. I also won the Conservatorium's Art Music vote on main campus convincingly, giving me a clear majority over the other Con tickets, and a seat on Council.

I didn't support Sonia because she's a Liberal - I supported Sonia because she was the best candidate. And, having been consulted on that How to Vote sheet, I did not receive preferences from other tickets because we considered Conservatorium Voice one of the strongest of our tickets - something that proved true on election day. Preferences lose value as they flow, and it would not have made sense to flow them towards a strong ticket.

That's right - the treatment of my classmates at the Con is disgusting, considering how much of their money goes back to the main campus. Frankly, I didn't expect Con students to vote at all - but this year they have shown their disgust in the actions of our main campus representatives by voting en masse - by faculty, Music has had by far the highest turnout of ANY in the university. It's now my responsibility as a Representative-elect to fulfill my promise to the Con in speaking up for them to the best of my ability.

Phanatical, how are you going to organise

- a shuttle bus from the con to fisher library, which would be impractical considering con students dont lump over to the library?

- an ATM, which seems like an unnecessary luxury compared to the other problems at the con

- more teachers for Composition, which does not seem under your control at all. You can't just say that 4th years will teach. You need a history and reputation to do such a thing, to have any credibility. I don't doubt that you're an excellent HSC tutor for composition, but for university? Its different to aural and harmony where you're either right or wrong.

- more opening hours for our con library?

How are these potentially under your control besides incessant protesting? Some of these ideas are great but aren't as simple as that. Its not like the Dean sits there are rations out money to buy herself leather chairs.

Diane Collins, Lewis Cornwell and other members of staff have spoken to the dean about such problems and your ideas seem so out of whack with what is actually feasible.

The reason the Con doesn't have the funding it needs, is because the funding that SHOULD be going to the Con is going to main campus. My job is to take the concerns of Con students to our main campus organisations, both as an SRC Rep, and potentially the new Senate Rep.

An ATM for the Con is an absolutely essential service, as far as many students are concerned. The Music Cafe currently offers a limited withdrawal service - but only if they have the cash available. Many students have come to me to ask for an ATM to be installed at the Con - it's not that expensive, and would benefit students, staff and the public greatly.

For senior composition students such as yourself, the shuttlebus might not be that useful. But for junior students and combined degree students, there is a greater emphasis on studies at main campus, combined with a greater need to access Fisher Library. This year, almost 20% of students at the Con have at least one class on main campus - and this number will increase over the next few years. The proposal is not altogether impractical - law students at St. James have a similar need, and the bus would run via the Law school. Furthermore, it would replace an existing book run made by the Library.

It is my job as a student rep to continue to raise the concerns of Composition first years. It's already hard enough to get into the damned course (I've got a couple students applying for it), I believe that once they're in they deserve the best possible education. Next year's students are getting an excellent teacher in the form of Winsome Evans from main campus - but it doesn't replace one-to-one teaching. I am well and truly of the belief that a fourth year composer is more than adequately taught to teach first year composition, and not only would it give students greater access to different opinions and thoughts (not to mention, time to actually look at their scores), but also give fourth years essential teaching skills that they will need in their careers. Considering that there are quite a number of last year's fourth year teachers actually teaching first and second year composition students right now, I don't think it'd be much of a stretch to incorporate teaching into the syllabus.

As for the Library, it is an ESSENTIAL service. More than once I've spent an hour in the library before my Thursday and Friday 9am classes, getting the homework I should have done a week ago done that morning. To take away the library is to take away an essential resource that many students find necessary for successful preparation for their tutorial, lectures and seminars. The influence I can now bring to the table does not give me the power to increase library opening hours - but it will help. We have the CSA, a Con EAG, and now an SRC Rep.
