Figured this is prob the best place to put this though its not in the syllabus.

What is everyones opinion on string theory, the branching universes, the energy strings and the like

I have no idea what string theory is. I believe Sheldon tried to prove it on an expedition to Antarctica or another cold place in The Big Bang Theory.

string theory is beyond the HSC course, some teachers will show you a little about it but its basically quantum mechanics

String theory is basically defunct now. It was "the thing" back in the 80s and 90s.

Look into "M theory" -- its an extension of String theory.

:)

Stuff is interesting. It's a real pity there are no universities that go further into it, unless you do postgraduate research.

You should check out the dvd series and book called "The elegant universe"

I prefer Loop Quantum Gravity over String Theory. Seems like the logical way to go about creating a quantum theory of gravity.

Seconding this. And Brian Greene's other book: The Fabric of the Cosmos. And also 'The Quantum World' by Kenneth Ford.
Eh, I've read criticism that it's simplified to the point of deception.

Isn't M-theory a combination of the main string theory perspectives not an extension?

If you ever wanted anything at a professional level, there's always arXiv.
