I've chosen this text for module c.. I want to know any ideas on why liesel is encourages or motivated to learn how to read and enrich her education? Is it because she wants to broaden her knowledge about her world? But isn't she too young to know that education will lead to a wider understanding? Or does she just want to prove she is intelligent to the kids who teased her when she couldn't read at school? Any ideas will help thanks

Liesel is naturally a very inquisitive character which is one of the reasons why she wants to become more knowledgeable about the world. There is also arguably a subjective reason in that books were the last thing she had in association to her deceased brother — she misconstrued The Grave Digger's Handbook, the first book she ever read, having belonged to her brother. In a way, reading books kept the legacy of her brother alive, as in the words of the novel: "Words are life."

However, as the novel progresses, the significance of reading for Liesel transcends that of her brother. Reading symbolises an anti-Nazi sentiment; it bonds her to Max and ultimately saves her life when the bombing occurs. In other words, Liesel very much reads books because it protects her from the horrors of the Holocaust and salvages the last opportunity for enlightenment she has in such a dire situation.
