I assume that you're referring to the work experience that is arranged by the university while you are undertaking your particular course? If so, this work experience is unpaid and you are typically only there for a restricted amount of time - however, what this does mean is that you are essentially "getting your foot in the door" at the particular firm, and so when you do finish your degree and graduate and if you did create a good impression while you were undertaking your internship, you will have a much higher chance of being employed full-time and on a permanent basis!
