Okay so let's say internally you're ranked last for a subject, around idk? 40% in that subject but in the hsc you completely smash the exam and get 100.
When they scale the exam or moderate the mark, does it remain 100 or does it drop down to something low?

It will drop, if you go to a bad school it will significantly drop, if you go to like lets say James Ruse, it will drop slightly.

Your external mark would be 100, that wouldn't change. However, your internal mark would be whatever the lowest exam mark is in your cohort.
Your overall HSC mark is an average of your internal and external mark.
I.e, you get 100% in the exam but the lowest mark in the cohort was 50%.
Ur overall hsc mark would be 100+50/2 = 75
