some of you are going on about how you expect 23+ / 25 because you did well in your trials, but quite honestly, your trial and assessment marks are marked against the standard of your school. becareful of judging your marks already according to how you did in your trials, because this time its marked against state level.

a girl at my school got 50% for her first asessment and arounf 70-80% for her second and third assement which was her trials. Her final hsc mark was 45/50. an A range.

now, my teacher went marked an essay for a private school that is top 10 in the state because they asked him to. The school gave the mark 23/25, which is of course really good, but my teacher said he would have given it an 18/25. He said it was no way an A range. that it was a clear b range and lalala, you get the idea. Btw, he is a senior ee2 marker, so he clearly knows what he's talking about.

therefore, what I'm trying to say is you can't just say i got "in my trials i got 23/25 therefore I'm expecting a smililar mark for the hsc. however, in saying that, the standard of the state overall i expect is lower, so you the whole scaling process can workin your favour.

anyway, i said this in another post, 8 pages is fine. A high-range creative sample from last year was only 8 pages long, although, when my teacher showed it to the class he was like "i wouldn't say it's a high-range." yeah, he's tough, but he shows the level of hsc markers. It also depends on what school you go to. 25/25 at a school ranked 500th, might be equivalent to 23/25 at james ruse, for an assessment mark.

anyway, please correct me if i said anything wrong, but that's just my opinion.

yay, HSC is nearly over!!!

I indeed acknowledge what you are saying, and you are exactly right in that.

However most schools use the BOS marking criteria when they mark school assessments. Its in their interest to mark in comparison with how the Board marks so that their assessment marks are not scaled down. Indeed some, but I dont think most would mark way over or way below the state standard. I think if you are getting a 23 in your assessments then at the very least, you will be getting a 20 in the hsc exam, to go to 18 would mean your school was being treacherous in their marking.

I think its about finding a balance between being relalistic in the marking, yet not being too harsh so as to discourage the student from trying, or too lenient so as to make them believe that they needn't continue working.

Again, it comes down to the quality of your response which I personally feel can be assessed to a greater level by your own self-criticism, and by comparing your response with examplars etc... English teachers are so inconsistent in their feedback anyway.

I got a 22/25 for my trial in the essay, and a 19/25 for my story.
Looking back, my essay was completely improvised, I went in their having only a knowledge of the texts; no genre theory, no thesis, no brilliant structure. Yet I still did moderately well in getting a 22. Beause of this, I feel that I will almost certainly do well in the exam because I have improved so much since then and my essay was infinitely better than the trial. Similarly, my story's concept was good, but the deliver was horrible, vastly dominated by dialogue and again, completely improvised.

Regardles of this all, I have the second best assessment mark in my school and although I have so many criticism of where we end up ranking, (around 70th i think), am reasonably confident of going well as our top end is always very good in contrast to our mid-range and long tail.

Anyway, why worry about the kind of things that we can no longer control. Set a mark you hope to achieve, but dont fall into believing that you will recieve that.

Good luck to everyone in all that remains of their exams; and I hope we all end up getting what we hope for an deserve.
