Just curious - two questions...

For those of you who have picked a course at ANU for their first preference, why did you decide to choose it?

I decided to put ANU first because I felt they offer a wider variety of subjects I could do and are interested in compared to other universities, it has a good reputation and smaller classes.

Those who don't live in Canberra and who have applied for ANU, when you tell people, have they given you interesting reactions?

When I tell people that I'm thinking of going there they exclaim, "Canberra! What a hole" or "well at least you can buy fireworks there" or "why?!?!?!" or "do you want to get away from your parents?" or "if that was my child, I'd cry for a month", along with various other reactions. Many people seem to think I'm crazy... is it only me getting comments like this?!

I picked it pretty much cos of its political science major, and because of the fact its the Australian National University. I think the name will be more recognised than other unis, particualry if I end up working overseas. Also, want the life experience.

Um, Ive been telling people thats where I want to go since last year, so most people I know are used to the idea now. My teachers were all for it, they think its cool to have one of their students down there (and they all promised to visit me!), my mum doesn't want me to go but will support any decision I make, my dad is all for it and offered to pay for everything, my friends are pretty complacent (we've grown apart in the last 3-4 months so I can't say Im gunna be that sad to leave them behind), and new people I tell are suprised but don't really have that much else to say about it. Some have mentioned its a hole, and I think Ive had the fireworks comment once, but thats it.

Yeah, it would be such a great experience. My Mum went away to college and she's all for the idea. She keeps telling me stories from when she dyed her and her friend's washing pink (my Dad says she's trying to re-live her youth) :p

There's too many things that interest me, I'm still trying to decide. Sociology has always interested me and I wouldn't mind doing a language. ANU is supposed to be good for Asian languages, but I can't see myself being too good at them!

You interested in doing the international relations thing? I went to the information day at Darling Harbour the other week. It sounded quite interesting.

Are you looking at doing an internship?? I don't know much about them, but they sound like they could be extremely helpful!!

I better stop rambling about ANU...

Nope, as my majors in Arts I wanna do Political Science and Sociology (have you met Alastair, the Sociology Dean, he's usually at the Darling Harbour things? He's really nice and makes it sound great!) and for minors Im gunna do some linguistics and history.

Well I don't know, I spose so, but I just don't like how its on the day of offers. If I don't get accom I'll go down there and ask about what to do, if I do get it I won't bother.

Yeah, it's weird, huh? I asked someone about it at the Darling Harbour day and they thought it was an "unusual" day to have it on.

I think it's time for bed for me!! Nice talking to you about ANU, Ms 12 - we must do it again sometime soon! Night :)

This seems to have turned into a private conversation but i'll give it a go anyway....

I chose ANU because it has an outstanding reputation for law (I applied for commerce/law) but has a reasonable cutoff compared to other unis with the same reputation (USyd, UWS). One downside is off campus accomodation is really expensive there compared to other areas I applied for (newcastle/wollongong/western sydney) but that should balance out because I there seems to be plenty of IT jobs there so my b/f can earn more money and pay for it all :) Another great thing is the partnership with Oxford, because I have family in the UK and if I could ever afford it one day would love to do a year of my degree overseas. I also heard from other students the campus is very nice, which is always a plus... I am going for a tour next week while the man goes for a job interview :) I also think the name Australian National Univeristy sounds impressive !

As for the reactions when I say I am going to canberra.... no one here says its a hole cos I live out in the stix (rural nsw in a town with a population of about 5000 people) so they think canberra sounds nice.... I get alot about the fireworks though, and for some reason, people keep commenting on an abundance of gay porn :p

I take it you two are definitely into your courses then ie way over the cutoff? I have to wait and see, because I am trying to get in on EAS and the statement they ask you to send if you are under the cutoff... I got 93.35 so lets cross our fingers and hope!
