Why is a beaker containing KOH and CuCl2 (or any solutions) a closed system? (1 Viewer)

A system involving only solid, liquid, and dissolved states can be closed so long as no processes involving gases are involved. A reaction occurring in aqueous phase taking place in a half-full beaker is not going to gain or lose anything under typical conditions on any time frame that will matter.

Presumably the system intended here is a solubility equilibrium for copper(II) hydroxide, where there are no gas states involved. That is:

Cu(OH)2 (s) <--------> Cu2+ (aq) + 2 OH- (aq)
