In terms of the chemistry involved?
Ensuring no CO32- is present. CO32- may precipitate with Ba2+ so HCl was added to acidify the solution and remove any carbonate ions that could be present, preventing the precipitation of barium salts with CO32-

Re: Why is HCl added to the fertiliser when finding the % of sulphate in lawn fertili

One more thing, how would I write an equation for the addition of HCl to the fertiliser (we don't know what's in the fertiliser other than sulphate).

Could I say,

SO4 2-(s) + 2HCl(aq) = H2SO4(aq) + 2Cl(aq)

and then,
Ba 2+(aq) + SO4 2-(aq) → BaSO4(s)

Thanks

We sort of do (the impurities are generally phosphates and carbonate)
