I have recently installed a 3rd hard drive on my system. It is connected to the same IDE cable as a DVD RW drive. I didn't change any of the settings ie Master, Cable Select, Slave etc settings when I installed it. However I changed my DVD drive to being slave. I have since noticed that whenever I try and use the drive when I am playing music, the sound becomes choppy indicating the computer is overworking. The drive generally is running quite slow. Ie it took 16 hours to backup 90 gigs worth of data.

What could I have done wrong to cause it to do this?

I think there's a overflow of data going through your system.

No don't connect it with your DVD drive as the data transfer doesn't not travel as fast. If you have an older board there might be other slots where you can plug in more ide cables. Otherwise you might have to puchase a new pci card that has ide slots.
