to whomever really cares about this:

i will do an example of a class with 5 students for a particular subejct
this is how the bos calculate your aligned hsc mark

student -- internal mark (sent in by your school)

bob --------------- 80%
bill ---------------- 75%
ben --------------- 78%
brad -------------- 92%
bango ------------ 45%

total INTERNAL pool of marks = 370 (80 +75 + 78...)

now bos issues percentages of your internal mark over the total internal pool of marks

bob ---- 0.216% (80/370)
bill ----- 0.203% (75/370)
ben ----- 0.211% etc
brad ----- 0.249% etc
bango --- 0.122% etc

ok now internals are finished...thats all we need, lets label those percentages - INTERNAL PERCENTAGES

now the students sit the external exam

bob ----- 75%
bill ------- 81%
ben ------ 62%
brad ------ 89%
bango------73%

now we total the EXTERNAL pool of marks = 380 (75+81...)

now to allocate aligned internal assessment marks, each student gets his INTERNAL PERCENTAGE of the total EXTERNAL pool of marks.

lets call these INTERNAL ALGINED MARKS

bob ---- 0.216% x 380 = 82%
bill ----- 0.203% x 380 = 77%
ben ----- 0.211% x 380 = 80%
brad ----- 0.249% x 380 = 95%
bango --- 0.122% x 380 = 46%

now we take 50% of the INTERNAL ALIGNED and 50% of the EXTERNAL mark

bob ------ 37.5 + 41 = 78.5%
bill ------- 40.5 + 38.5 = 79%
ben ------ 31 + 40 = 71%
brad ----- 44.5 + 47.5 = 92%
bango --- 36.5 + 23 = 59.5%

and abracadbra, your hsc aligned mark for that subject

EDIT: had the cohort done worse in the external exam all up, that is the external pool of marks be less than the internal, then overall each person would get a lower aligned internal mark. If the cohort does better and has a higher external pool of marks than internal, then the internal aligned marks will be higher.

hope u understood all that.

in laymans, the cohort usually does about the same in external pool as internal pool because of statistics and numbers, therefore usually the internal aligned marks end up being roughly the external exam marks distributed in rank order.

Thanks for that Andrew.. very enlightening. :)

So assessment ranks DO make a pretty big difference... *phew*

Isn't that the process of moderation? I thought aligning was the process carried out by judges after the exams have been sat and during the marking, leading to the formation of performance bands?

Good guide by the way.

hmm

what if the external pool is significantly greater than the internal pool?
then top ppl will get more than 100 for their internal marks ... like say the external pool in your example wasnt 380 but 410, then brad would get:
0.249 x 410 = 102.1
i know u said that theyre usually similar, but surely there are some cases where there is a big enough difference for this to occur.

lol

if your mark is over 100 it will remain at 100
and as long as the ppl who are ranked below u and do crap in the hsc have a significantly lower internal assessment mark than u do, dw you are fine

Either way I think we can all agree that the Board of Studies are a bunch of fuckwits with nothing better to do than increase the number of youth suicides exponentially.

Sounds like your doing moderation of assessment marks there, but its not that simple. All exam marks stay the same for each person regardless of rank. However, first rank in assessments receives the highest exam mark as their moderated assessment mark. This also occurs for the lowest rank receving the lowest exam result as their moderated assessment mark. Then the marks are allocated accordingly to each rank, depending on the spread of marks from each rank will make up the spread of moderated assessment marks.

suppose bango never got the hang of anything
and miraculously in the stuvac week goes...

"OOoOoOooh NOW i get postmodernism!" hence got 73% in the exam.

Then his result is 59%?

Poor bastard.

It works out fair in the end. No one just "gets" something over a 3 week time span. If the importance of the assessment mark was lower people wouldnt bother staying up til 5am finishing crappy hand-in assignments.

student -- internal mark

bob --------------- 99%
bill ---------------- 34%
ben --------------- 21%
brad -------------- 9%
bango ------------ 32%

total INTERNAL pool of marks = 195

INTERNAL PERCENTAGES

bob ---- 0.508%
bill ----- 0.174%
ben ----- 0.108%
brad ----- 0.046%
bango --- 0.164%

now the students sit the external exam

bob ----- 98%
bill ------- 40%
ben ------ 18%
brad ------ 12%
bango------24%

now we total the EXTERNAL pool of marks = 192

INTERNAL ALGINED MARKS

bob ---- 0.508% x 192 = 98%
bill ----- 0.174% x 192 = 33%
ben ----- 0.108% x 192 = 21%
brad ----- 0.046% x 192 = 9%
bango --- 0.164% x 192 = 31%

EXTERNAL mark

bob ------ 98%
bill ------- 37%
ben ------ 20%
brad ----- 11%
bango --- 28%

As you can see, do well in the subject and exam and no matter who is in your class your mark won't be affected.
