schnap...

Pardon me.

Anyway, I wanna ask a q'ion; what exactly is 'Law'? And, in terms of doing it at uni, what is 'Law', requirements/suggested 'what makes a "good" lawyer?', course content, etc.?

----
Edit: So, melsc, could it be said that universities are looking for, or perhaps favor, applicants who do (well in) Extension II English?

What do you mean what is law?
They suggest the highest level of English you can handle. They don't require much but good communication skills and critical thinking are always good.

Not necessarily, you need to remember they only consider UAI (at least that is the case in NSW). Also you need good English and Communication skills but it doesn't mean you need to do x2 english. Your best bet for getting into law is doing subjects you are good at and will get you the best marks which follow ur interests, maxmise the ur marks they dont ask for specific subjects :)

Did you want to know what sorts of things you study in law? Is that what u were asking when u said what is law?

I suppose so; it'd be great if you were to speak a little on this.

Well, I guess a bit of my question refers to what is studied in it.

What occupations/fields are opened to one who does Law?
Is there any non-communicative occupation?

melsc, what was it about law that caught your eye?

Thanks a lot, by the way!:D

I don't quite know what difference it makes since I only occassionally use the resources here, but the blue name gives you a false sense of importance, and I quite like that.

Jachie, you don't need a blue name to be important to me. :shy:

Generally with law you study core subjects such as:
*Introductory subjects which teach you skills to study law (reading cases, interpreting legislation), history of law etc...
*'substantive law subjects' such as criminal law, torts, contracts, consitutional, administrative, property, equity, remedies etc...
*ethics subjects
*then some law electives in the area(s) you want to specialise/have interests in.
*plus the non law subjects for your other degree.

There are heaps of options, I can never remember what they are but if you look on the uni websites they usually will tell you the variety of fields their graduates enter.

I always found law interesting and always wanted to be a lawyer...that was it :)

Everyone I seem to meet who is middle-aged and watches me deliver a speech seems to urge me to do law. I really couldn't stomach it.

I used to be interested in law, but we went on an excursion to the downing centre or something last year. God it was so boring.
It wasn't so bad, I went 2 weeks ago and the cases were very interesting...Cases on a Chinese pimp and his prostitute on trial, a Peruvian drug smuggler and Lebanese shooting at Hurstville. It wasn't as glamourous as you'd think though.

the only remotely interesting thing I saw was a guy getting off drug possession because he said he thought they were herbs.
the rest was shit.

ok, I confess, its not just about the money. (but it would be nice $$$)

i really like arguing a point (woo hoo debating) and English is my favorite subject (yay EE2!)
and I went on excursion to the local court and I found it quite interesting, clearly there will be draw backs, like any job. but from what I see, I would like it.

simonloo, how come you have a custom subtitle, you aren't on premium are you?
Go to "Edit Profile" and change your custom subtitle.

I did that a while ago, but to no effect. Perhaps a glitch in the forum...
