what is the raw mark I would have to get on each of the following subjects to get a band 6?

-extension 1/2 maths
-chemistry
-physics
-advanced english

this would help me know if I'm on the right track for how well I'm doing on practice tests and such, thanks.

sorry if this is the wrong board i don't quite know where to put this.

External marks do not get moderated. So there is no such thing as "raw external mark".

Yes there is. RAW EXTERNAL MARK is called HSC RAW mark. It's the actual HSC mark you got.

Really? That's news to me then.
I know internal get moderated because every school does different assessments.
But why would HSC mark be moderated? The UAC would just look at your percentile.

Top 30% in 3u/4u get band 6's.

They get a panel of judges to look at the exam and determine the cut-off marks for specific bands according to the difficulty of the exam.

So a simple 60%+ raw mark could scale to a band 6, and technically speaking if all studnets get a 60%+raw mark, they all get band 6.

It changes year to year, sometimes only 3% of studnets get band 6 and sometimes 20-30% get band 6.

Seem pretty wierd to me anyway. Your percentile won't be affected, scaling don't seem to serve any purpose apart from aesthetic.

It's funny that people stress over scaling so much when it's out of their control. Should just do what you can and you will get waht you deserve.

Well, say I am in yr 12 and want to drop a subject.
I am doing moderately good in PD/H/PE with 80%
I am doing moderately good in Math with 80%
I like both subject equally.
This is when scaling comes to play.
But besides that it probably have no affect on you.

it changes year to year according to the difficulty of the examination.. so you don't really know. However, if you really wanna know an estimation of what mark you would need in a particular subject then use "search" i'm sure past HSC students have posted about such things.

From what i know math ext 1 you probably need 70% (give or take) to get band 6. and in math ext 2 65%? (give or take). Generally, a large percentage of people who do extension courses tend to get band 6s.

ok so basically no one REALLY knows what raw % you need to get on the external exams to get a band 6 since BOS doesn't release the data?

that's really useful, great.

but as for speculation (lol) the general consensus is:

ext 1 : 70%+
ext 2: 65%+
chem: 85%+
phys: 90%+
eng adv.: 90%+

would you guys agree with this?

thanks
