I believe it's:

1. Court session start
2. Opening statement by prosecution
3. Opening statement by defence
3. 1st witness called by prosecution
- Examination in Chief
- Cross Examination
- Re-Examination if needed
(repeat 3 until all witnesses are called)
4. 1st witness called by defence
- Examination in Chief
- Cross Examination
- Re-Examination if needed
5. Closing statement first by prosecution, then defence.

Or did i just completely miss your question?

yeh both sides call witnesses
afterall the plantiff is proving the defendent is in the wrong and the defendents is proving (although it's not goal to do so) that he isn't in the wrong.

its really up to the plantiff to prove beyond reasonable doubt (criminal) or more porabable (civil) that the defendent is guilty than he is not guilty

so the defendents i guess calls witnesses to try and flaw the prosecutions proofs.

I saw that when i was at work experience at the DPP, that was an awesome day. The DPP's witness suddenly decided not to talk, so the prosecutor said some legal mumbo jumbo and goes "in your statement you said blah blah blah, is this true?" hahaha the witness had no idea what just happened (he was a complete derro too)
