Hey

I am in Year 12 at the moment and I thought that it would be good to start thinking about what I really want to do in future.

I have been thinking of few possibilities, here we go:
- completeing an actuarial degree & maths degree (i.e. double degree) at macquarie or at unsw
- completing a law degree at usyd or at unsw
- commerce degree at unsw (i.e. finance and marketing perhaps)

However, at the same time, I am thinking of getting an education degree somewhere so that I can become a high-school teacher becuase teaching is one of my passion. But I have heard that it takes like 3-4 years to complete education degree or something and I really don't want to put too much burden on my self going through all that.

So my question is, is it possible to get an education degree in a year so that I can become a teacher if I want? BTW I will most likely complete the education degree while at uni.

in b4 clueless idiots saying "dip ed"

by the time you're at uni, the only quick way to do it would be an M. Education or M. Teaching (depending what on the uni), which takes at least 2 years, at the end of your degree

nope, both are professional degrees for specific careers so you couldn't do them together

teaching will only come with arts, science or music

ah damn, so my best bet would be to do:

actuary + maths degree for 4-5 years -> education degree for 2+ years

Perhaps you should consider doing advanced science (mathematics) at USYD, then completing 1-2 years for an education diploma so you can teach. I believe this would give you the opportunity to work in a finance-related firm as well as teach fundamental mathematics at high school level.

That said, you can do a Dip Ed in a year. Unless they plan on changing it? (ANU has a dip ed that can be done in a year, I know somebody who did interior design at uni, did a dip ed and is now a high school teacher)

CSU has this

Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) at Charles Sturt University :: Additional Requirements
Oh I see, that seems quite good.

But does any other uni offer that kind of course?

I am rather surprised that tafe doesn't have such teaching degree course.

That said, plenty of people with degrees in Maths education often leave the system and go on to work in finance. If you'r smart about the specialisation and the subjects, it shouldn't limit you doing a teaching degree if you ever decide to leave.

Dip Ed is being phased out and probably won't be around by the time Namu finishes his undergrad degree... UMelb, UNCLE and others have already finished and replaced them with a 2 year Masters in Teaching, other unis to follow

TAFE doesn't offer degrees, highest you can get from TAFE is a diploma, and I'm fairly sure they aren't accepted as teaching qualifications in the education system.

I think Armidale (UNE) offers a similar degree, ANU in Canberra does too. The thing is, with CSU you can do the degree by distance, so you can earn while you learn.

I thought to do a Masters of Education (although it might change), you already needed to have an education degree? At this stage, the Masters of Education at CSU is only offered to those with existing tertiary qualifications in education.

Oh I need to get some facts straight:

- so I can do a 1 year education degree at CSU through distance ed?
- is it possible to become a teacher WITHOUT the education degree?

thanks SWsydneytutor, I have considered that possibility and it's quite possible that I will pursue that. But I am currently leaving my options open. One thing that I am absolutely about is that I will do either actuarial and/or (advanced) maths. Law or other commerce-related stuff are just minor considerations that I hold.

thanks to katie and will as well.

yeah

it's confusing because 'Masters' is usually a higher postgrad degree

but at UNCLE, at any rate, they've called the 2 year dip ed replacement the Masters of Teaching

other unis might call it something else... maybe even "2 year dip ed", lol

The CSU one is 18 months.

I don't think it is possible, anymore, to become a teacher without an education degree of some description.

If I wanted to be a teacher after my degree, I'd have to go and do some postgraduate degree in education. Unless your undergraduate degree is education, you can't do something like Actuarial studies and decide you want to do teaching, without the education requirement.

TBH, the education requirement is a crock. You may be more qualified to do maths teaching with an ac degree than a normal maths teacher, but you haven't fulfilied the fluffy social studies crap, like "working with adolescents" and whatever else they teach.

basically all the Bachelor of Teaching at CSU does, is teach you how to develop and implement teaching curriculum.

Thank you so much for the information. I understand now.

Well, I guess I will still go for distance education course since I might be able to work as an actuary and getting that degree at the same time.

I am doing my degree by distance ed. If you decide to do the Bachelor of Teaching (graduate entry) when you finish your undergrad, if you're in no hurry, you can do it part time over 3 years and work your way through it. Although full time by distance probably won't kill you either.

If you don't mind going to University of Melbourne:

Complete a next-gen Bachelour of Science, majoring in mathematics & Statistics(3 years), and then, also at UoM, do a master of teaching (2 years).

If you decide after the three years to not be a teacher, you could easily use your B.Sc to get a job in finance etc. or do a different degree as well.

Oh thanks, Katie Tully, SylvesterBr, Will Shakespeare, SWSydneytutor and Without Wings.

Yeah, I am not in hurry and the reason why I wanted to finish in a year was because of my earler perception that it was impossible to work and do university degree at the same time. (I wasn't fully aware of the distance ed's existence)

MEd is only available to graduates already with teaching qualifications (BEd, or another degree + DipEd or MTeach/BTeach) and isn't a teaching qualification in itself.

TBH, the education requirement is a crock. You may be more qualified to do maths teaching with an ac degree than a normal maths teacher, but you haven't fulfilied the fluffy social studies crap, like "working with adolescents" and whatever else they teach.
Surely a good teacher is someone with a broad knowledge of education with all its facets and the people they work with rather than only the machinations of merely teaching. Maybe? I dunno.
