Think Carr called that shaky middle ground relativism or something.

Ok, the one crucial difference between Carr and post-modernist freaks (according to John Warren) is that Carr didn't accept that objectivity was beyond our reach. According to Carr, the objective historian is one who has the right understanding of the pattern of development of history, which includes an awareness of the likely shape of the future.

It has been called arrogance by some and a desperate attempt to handle the danger of relativism by others.

I realise this is many years later than the last post, but in case some current people are looking at this...jenkins gives a good explanation of the Carr-Elton evidence debate in "Re-Thinking History" on pages 48 and 49 if you can get your hands on it.
