this may sound quite stupid, but for my chapter headings and what not, can i use colours?

not for the actual writing of course, that will stay black..

There's nothing against it but it'd be a waste of time (and I wouldn't recommend it) unless you needed it to illustrate a particular point.

It is not a waste of time! [i'm working on the title-pages for my chapters at this very moment]

Adding colour will only show the marker that your PIP was not a last-minute job. It demonstrates that you've taken the time and effort to neatly present your PIP.

But try not to go overboard with colour usage - stick to a few and use it throughout
