Does anyone here know which unis offer dentistry based on:
- Tertiary Records
- UMAT/Gamsat

And which unis only take into account that they will only take your previous two semesters GPA?

Was hoping to rape first year whatever, do well in UMAT, and then apply for transfer after first year. Possible? Or do I have do complete a full undergrade degree like USyd, which is not what im after?

yes u can with the
Uni of Adelaide
UWA
UMELB
but i kno lots of ppl with good GPAs and decent UAIs get turned down.. cos they have university quotas for teritary transfer... i think ure better off reading the unis guidelines..
but unlike some med school which only take yr 12 leavers or u need a completed Bach...

most dent schools will accept uni transfers but they are all interstate..

check
www.health.adelaide.edu.au
www.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au
www.meddent.uwa.edu.au
for the most up to date details

Please note that UWA and Adelaide also require interviews, which are expensive and emotionally draining.

Thanks for the replies gents.

My UAI is similar to Roberts, so I dont think it would be an advantage if the Unis use it as a method for selecting potential candiates for the course. Thats what my original post was asking about Dental Schools which rely solely on your tertiary record, and UMAT/GAMSAT.

Yes, Ive been looking at the sites for a while now, hoping of a better selection method for non recent school leavers.

3.1.2 NON SCHOOL LEAVERS (i.e. Graduates, Tertiary students and School of Dental Science BSc Honours Students)

(a) Prerequisites

Prerequisite subjects (as detailed above) or their equivalents must be met for entry to first year and applicants may have undertaken any tertiary course. All applicants must undertake the UMAT.

(b) Selection

The Selection Committee will consider the applicant’s full academic record and recent study would be expected.
Taken directly from Bachelor of Dental Science - Melbourne Uni

Point A - Prerequisite Subjects:

VCE

Satisfactory completion of the VCE with an ENTER score of 96.00** or above and a study score of at least 35 in VCE units 3 and 4 in each of English (any) and Chemistry and one of Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or Physics.
I assume that the ENTER is not taken into account for those that didnt get in first time (directly from year 12). Correct?

Ive done the HSC:

Standard English (73)
Mathematics 2U (85)
Mathematics Ext 1 (Band 3 of 5)
Chemistry (Band 3)

So does that satisfy the 35 in VCE units 3 and 4 in each of English...?

Point B - Selection

(b) Selection

The Selection Committee will consider the applicant’s full academic record and recent study would be expected.
What is meant by full academic record?

Is it your previous two semesters results?

Is it your most recent 3 years results?

Is it your entire completed degree results?

Ive emailed these questions to them, and have not recieved a reply since Monday, even though I sent another exact email to them on Wednesday.

A full academic record is just that - your academic record for any time spent at a tertiary institution. How long you've been there is specified elsewhere (usually a minimum of a full academic year).

Judging by your response, it looks like im cactus.

First Year: Did Civil Engineering (4 Failures, 3 Passes, 1 Distinction)

Yes, I was stupid, so at the end of first year, I applied through UAC using my UAI to transfer to B. Science. A fresh start you can say.

2nd Year: Did Science (4 HDs, 3 Distinctions, 1 Pass)
3rd Year: Did Science (2 HDs, 2 Distinctions)

As you can see, ive improved. However, whats going to haunt me is those 4 failures.

Provided that Robert is correct, i can safely say that im fucked. Seriously. :(

Life can be sooo cruel.

Yes, one or two failures is acceptable, but trying to explain 4 in first year would be impossible.

Also, im going to be compared against other candidates with a GPA of 7.0.

Alright, you probably have guessed that it was going to be my next quesiton.

Other than USyd, which other Dental School does not consider your UAI, and only considers your last 6 semesters (or two at minimum) for tertiary record?

Hmm not necessarily toast. Like he said, if you discuss your situation with the admissions director at your school of choice you've got a chance they'll ignore the first year. Perhaps you can arrange an interview with the dean of the faculty or something, who knows. Just TRY.

Doesn't USYD also have B Dentistry?
Yup, and it looks like the only one I can attempt to get in, although the thing that worries me is GAMSAT. Would prefer UMAT/STAT.

I don't think any dental school uses STAT, but I may be mistaken. GAMSAT is harder because you need to have actual knowledge, but they do only take your last three years' GPA into account so you should do very well once you finish your course.
