Can I suggest you google some web pages on the Writer's Voice. eg.
Writing: Individual Voice -- Six Traits Assessment Style Tone Personlity
For new writers it is sort of the holy grail of understanding what it means to be an author and developing your own voice can be the difference between selling a manuscript and not.
Basically, "voice" is the way someone writes, the words they choose, the tone they use, which sense they use more in their descriptions (visual, audio, olfactory, touch etc) and so on. A turn of phrase, mix of words and so on.
A distinctive voice is something that is new in characteristic and this is what good publishers look for when they assess new manuscripts. Is the voice new to the market or is it derivative? They want to market a new way of describing, talking, acting etc in words.
This is how a distinctive voice can help you see things in a new way.
Hope that helps.
