Sorry for bumping this up after a few months. I was wondering isnt Harvard fully needblind to intl students and they meet full demonstrated need of accepted students regardless of nationality? I just wanted to clarify this since whenever harvard/yale/princeton does their info night they always stress that an ivy league edu is affordable since they're need blind and meet full aid. Also harvard now requires student from a family earning <US$60000 to contribute nothing to a Harvard education.
I think that might only be for US students.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the financial aid package is irrespective of citizenship -- at least for Yale, Princeton and Harvard.
I'm not sure that's correct.

International students cannot apply for the same Financial Aid as US citizens, for the exact same reasons as HECS isn't available to non-AU citizens. You can apply for loans like anybody on Earth (http://www.iefa.org/), but you can't get the same government-subsidised Financial Aid.

Unless you're after a second BA (much more common here and the UK than in the US), International Students simply don't go to Ivy League unis for undergrad without a tonne of old money.

Yes, there are some scholarships available for international students at Ivy Leagues, but the normal financial aid is not available. See here: Yale University School of Art: Home That being said, I've only looked at Yale, Brown, and Penn as these are the only ILs offering my subjects. I highly doubt that the non-IL colleges offer more for international students, however I could be wrong about that. /shrug

Edit: I just looked at Harvard as well, and it looks the same. You can apply for some scholarships, grants, and aid, but not the kind of aid that most US citizens get.

Sorry, I probably should have been more detailed. When I looked into Yale, Harvard and Princeton for myself, I found that they organised financial aid packages regardless of citizenship (unlike some universities which only offer financial aid to American students, or have completely different processes for international students, and so on.)

You're quite right in saying that you can't apply for all scholarships, grants and aid, but my research gave me the impression that the Ivy Leagues tend to try and accommodate financially for all students who wish to attend, regardless of their citizenship.

Yeah, you're right. Yale and Harvard (though not quite sure about Princeton) DOES offer financial aid to all students regardless of citizenship.

However, when you apply, you need to state whether you plan on receiving financial aid (including how much your parents earn and are willing to contribute to your education) and they will take this into account when processing your application. This may negatively affect your chances, especially if you are an international student (Harvard's mission is to create America's future leaders after all) and not considered part of a 'disadvantaged' minority (ethnicity plays a part in the American selection process).

But once - or more appropriately, if - you get in, they will grant you financial aid according to your need.

I know i guy who came top 10 in the world in physics and chemistry in his A levels, he applied for cambridge for med and they rejected him
One of the most retarded things I have ever heard on this board. No-one gets ranked "in the world". It all depends where you are studying, or if you do the IB or any of the other multitudes of school diploma & similar. As in, I got top in Victoria for English in 2004, but there's absolutely no way possible at all to know "in the world" and frankly it is absolute bullshit what you're saying. :hammer:

"I'm 3rd and a half best in the World at life!" What complete nonsense.

To the OP: a few cases:

(A.) A guy i went to school with got 99.94 ENTER (I don't know what that is in UAI; but it is .01 of maximum possible score, total l33t). He got a scholarship to go to NYU studying arts, from there transferred to Columbia finance (actuarial studies), and is now having dinner with the head of Goldman Sachs.

(B.) Friend at University of Melbourne did commerce + Hons. (finance), won come prestigious awards (best honours paper & first in final year), and had an extremely good GPA. Was admitted this last year to PhD in finance at Northwestern University.

(C.) Another acquaintance from school, got 99+ ENTER, went to Ormond College - University of Melbourne - studied arts majoring in history & classics. Got some awards (final year history prize) and was offerred (didn't even apply) to study any undergraduate degree that he wanted from Cambridge. He chose law (wanker).

All of these have something in common: they are just really naturally talented in either mathematics and science, on one hand, or humanities on the other (there is an element of specialisation & direction). These guys are seriously the closest people I know to geniuses, and 2 of the 3 work their absolute tip of their balls of to get to such unis (the other one who went to NYU is just innately the biggest Asian math freak I've ever met and was doing yr.12 equivalent calculus & algebra in yr.6).

Intrinsically I don't think its something that "aim for" in the way you're suggesting. If you're smart enough you would probably already be there or already have it as a clear possibility. If you want to make it a goal then all the best for you, but you better have a 99+ final year school mark, and High Distinction average in most or all of your Uni subjects, and be at one of Australia's best uni's. Plus once you get there you've actually got to pass whilst competing against the (qualitatively) smartest people in the world.

- There is a reason why something like 3 people throw themselves to their deaths from the top floor of the NYU library each year.

- If you are in a G8 university in Australia you are doing exceptional anyway, and the quality of teaching is amazing. Seriously our universities are top notch, even worldwide. There is plenty prestigue & challenges in your backyard, let alone abroad.

- You have better chances just studying abroad at one of the Unis; I know Hong Kong Uni, London Business School, Berkely, Stanford, Yale, Boston College, etc. take visiting students, and if you're studying at a G8 university it will be fairly easy getting a semester at these.

- Don't do something just because you want people to perceive you as l33t. See a psychiatrist instead to cure your affluenza & image/esteem complex and be happy & grateful with what you have.

No need to get all defensive just because you got rolled. There is absolutely no scale than measures every student in the World. TO say so means that you are severely mentally handicapped. But please still go around saying it as it will quickly alert people as to what sort of douche bag you are. These sorts of alarm are social necessities.

Not applying for something based on vanity is also a very purposeful and correct point, although it would be hard for a vain person to realise the truth in this.

No, I have never tried to apply for one of them nor even considered it. Would've had a decent probability of getting in with score + extra curricular (not only that I didn't even have to go to class in year 12 to get that score, just went to the exams) but see no point in it. I went to the most l33t exclusive college in Australia but absolutely hated it, full of pretentious wankers like yourself --people who will never realise the truth of life and are more caught up with what mommy & daddy think of them, or whether they can get a summer internship at the coolest bank.

You sound like you have a severe image/esteem issues as I was talking about before. Don't be sensitive about it, 70% of people I meet have the condition, it's due to the overly individualistic society and media.

nah its not the early offer program. its for international students like you said. if your interested you should call the admission office. you just need to make it clear that you need a decision before their actual release because your offer in aus will lapse
When/where was your interview, out of curiosity?

He got a good reference from someone really high up in the Church of England, who also happened to study at the same college for which he was applying.

Like huge businesses (which they really are), old and fantastic universities are generally willing to bend the rules.
