I'm a little on the borderline with VSU. I completely agree with your thoughts about minority students not having to pay for campaigns that they don't agree with, but at the same time unions at all universities generally did a pretty good job when they had compulsory fees and it appears that under VSU USyd is one of the few that has a surviving and functioning union and related services/facilities.
My ideal fees structure would be that all fees are deferred like HECS (I seriously can't afford a $600 or whatever it was upfront payment), and that the money, not including general support for C&S, would go only towards non-political issues. Money for supporting stuff like the Make Howard History campaign would come from another voluntary fee on top of the base fee.
Oh, and sports amenities and whatever would also be voluntary except money to pay for groundskeeping etc.
